Newark College Promise Scholarship (NCPS) was founded in 2014 to assist minority students with continuing their college education.  One of the Newark Housing Authority (NHA) goals is to leverage resources to encourage resident self-sufficiency.  This goal ties in with both Mayor Ras Baraka and the Newark City Learning Collaborative goal “to increase the percentage of Newark residents with post secondary degrees, certificates and quality credentials from 17% to 25% by 2025”.

Often these students hail from single parent households in some of the City’s toughest neighborhood where crime, drug abuse and low educational expectations are the norm.  These ambitious young people are often the first in their family to attend college and break the cycle of poverty.

To date NCPS has awarded scholarships to over 20 recipients.  This scholarship fund is critical to the success of those students who have proven their desire to earn a college degree.  The purpose of this program is to increase the likelihood of high school students from Newark entering and graduating from college.
